WP 3 – Fuel formulation, fuel testing and fuel approval (DLR)
Work package 3 comprises the formulation, testing and approval of future fuels with the aim of determining the fuel design space based on the refinery concepts considered in the project and identifying and testing products with high application potential. Existing fuel specifications are scrutinized and, in an iterative process with WP 2, optimized formulations are developed with regard to approvability, performance and emissions.
The fuels produced are tested in several screening stages, in which fuel candidates are analytically characterized using different methods and compared with specifications, depending on the quantity available.
The technical evaluation of promising fuel candidates is then carried out specifically for the various applications in aviation, shipping and road transport.
Innovations
The use of renewable raw materials requires a rethink in formulation, as conventional specifications and refinery concepts are not fully transferable. This is one of the reasons why the work package uses an innovative approach to fuel development by means of experimental and numerical design space exploration.
